Why Track Permits?
Permits for mining, industrial facilities, wastewater discharge, and other projects can have lasting impacts on our water, air, and land. Public review periods are often the only time we can influence decisions before a project is approved. By tracking permits, you can organize your community, submit comments, and hold agencies accountable.
Montana’s public notice system – The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and other agencies post notices online, often with a 30‑day comment window. You don’t need to be an expert; your voice as a resident matters.
Step‑by‑Step Guide
Find the Public Notices
Start with the Montana DEQ Public Notices page. You can filter by date, type of permit, or region. Also check county planning departments for local permits (e.g., zoning, gravel pits).
Understand the Permit
Read the notice carefully. Note the permit number, applicant name, location, and comment deadline. Look for links to the full application – they often contain detailed plans and environmental studies.
Track Important Dates
Create a simple spreadsheet or use our tracking log (below) to record deadlines, hearing dates, and your own comment status. Set reminders on your calendar.
Draft Your Comments
Use our Sample Comment Letter to craft a clear, polite response. Focus on specific concerns: water quality, air emissions, wildlife, noise, or lack of public process.
Submit Before the Deadline
Email, mail, or use the online portal. Keep a copy for your records. If possible, ask neighbors and allied groups to also comment – many comments are more powerful than one.
Follow Up
After the comment period, the agency must respond. Check for final permit decisions. If you’re not satisfied, you may have further options (administrative appeals, legal challenges).
